How can we use her ? By the way at New Designers yesterday I was
"playing" with the new batch of Goldsmiths Design Graduates who have
amazing potential. They have a brilliant format for engaging the
public in debate about design ... Would you like to meet with them ?

Dear Dorothy ,

Thank you for this.

Having studied the agenda I can see that this is not what I thought it
would be !

I am deeply involved in Social Innovation but with Social Enterprise
at the heart . I had , perhaps , misunderstood the main topic as being
the delivery of funding to beneficiaries rather than the provision of
effectively pro bono advice to a profit making enterprise.

In the circumstances please accept my apologies on this occasion.

With kind regards ,

Sydney

Pitch space write up

The Pitch Space = Presuming we’re going with the idea of working in small groups, each group will have two minutes to ‘pitch’ their idea to the crowd. There will be a soapbox, so the nominated speaker from each group will stand up there to deliver their pitch. A bell or whistle will sound at the start and end of two minutes [or it can double ring and start and end and single ring at the 30 seconds before the end] at which point, the elected member from the next group gets up and begins their speech and so on. There is a board supplied, where people can pin some drawings to hold up while pitching. The pitch should deal with the starting point of the idea, include the process, any theoretical background, possible material realisation with some explanation of user and context and possible further development. If you don't finish your pitch in the alloted time, you will not be allowed to finish. [fun fun]

Hey Guys!

I am putting a timetable together for everyone's attendance on the

show at any point within these fews days before I put a rota together.
Below are the opening times. I expect we will be there a few mins
before and after the show opends everyday so that everything is
tidy/presentable and safe.

idea swap

here is my idea for the swapping of ideas thing.

<img src="http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c202/jackisthenewblack/IMG_1066.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket">

this could work well with the whole umpire/masterofceremonies controlling it. at a designated time, each section would put what they had been working on into a segment of the wheel. the wheel would then be wound up and let go causing it to spin. when the umpire shouts stop, everyone grabs on to the wheel and pics out the thing in front of them.

is the table definitely going to be a rectangle? if so, we could either have it in one corner of the space (so we'd all have to get up and gather around it to use it - making a performance out of it) or we could have it over the table and work out a way to define which person gets what.

<img src="http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c202/jackisthenewblack/IMG_1067.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket">

i guess if its in the corner it would be easier to hang.. how big is the space again?

<img src="http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c202/jackisthenewblack/IMG_1068.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket">

thoughts?

jack

ps. doing this via liam's thing so i hope it works!

Just a thought on notice board designs.

Umpire and an idea

These are image-inspirations of the umpire...

and the factory (Is it the design factory we try to make? or not? )...

As we discussed in Hobgoblin, the easiest and cheapest way to distinguish Umpire is wearing Hi-Vis coat. Available for 4.46 pounds in B&Q.
http://nextday.diy.com/app/jsp/product/productPage.jsp?productId=36850
It may be worn with the overall as well.

The fashion probably depends on his/her roles in the space but I'm
still not sure how the umpire plays there.
Possible roles are...

: acts as a chairman.
: says "start" and "stop" as a time keeper.

: judges good or bad design.
: states briefs.
: adds fancy details of briefs. (eg. some umpire says "draw within a minutes" but some may say "draw without using hands")
: shouts with a megaphone.
: slaps a person who doesn't follow umpire's rule.
: gives a yellow or a red card to a person who doesn't follow umpire's rule.

: forces participants to salute the god of design or something.

And also, I think the umpire doesn't have to be alone. They can be like a commentator and a narrator of over-by-over sports broadcasting. Or they can be like a reporter and a cameraman with a real video camera connected to a screen (like Milan did at Pirate Utopias). Then, we can broadcast activities of inside the factory to outside. It also can play as records of our show as well as make more gameshow feelings.

It's not always visitors have enough time to join and actually make something in our workshop. I think majority of them are moving to the next booth within 5 to 10 minutes. We should think how to entertain them in a short time even if they're not joining to make.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just come up with an idea for categorising switchboard briefs. The idea is we could divide briefs into human body parts like head, eye, ear, mouth, hand, etc. then, make a switchboard for these parts. If the board indicates "head", it means "brainstorming" or other conceptual processes.
For example,
Head: Conceptual process: eg) brainstorming
Hand: Making process: eg) paper-prototyping
Eye: Visual process: eg) photoshoping
Ear: Sound process: eg) Finding sound inspirations of the object

Mouth: Presentation process: eg) Pitch

The good point of categorising is its flexibility. We can start to make a switchboard machine as soon as we decide categories. It's more flexible than putting specific activities on the switchboard. I'm sure some new idea for activities will be come up during show and we will want to add it, or if some problem happens for some activity, we don't have to put X on the board.
Setup dates:

Tuesday 14th 8-7

visitors/ welcome/ enter space

Some concepts i was thinking of over the weekend. Giving people
tickets which denote time slots, this will allow people to calculate
how much time they have spent in the factory and allow them to clock
in and start work. It also shows a commitment to that ammount of
time.. so if you clock in for 15 mins, you stay for that period. I was
also thinking about ways of drawing people into the space and
navigating them to their stations. By giving someone a ticket and a
uniform they are drawn into the genre and will hopefully begin to feel
like they are working in a production line. The lines on the floor
give them a direct path from the uniform to the work station, the
hooks also allow people to see how many statoions are free. The red
lines/desks have a hospital/prison asthetic and the semi circle at the
end of the line denotes a barrior where you stand. I also thought
about how the tools could be displayed on the desk, for example in a
tool belt or bento box style. I think it would be easiest if every
station had the same tools.

That reminds me...

For the 'switchboard' design, i was imagining a cross between this machine from metropolis;

And, the 'dove from above'

In/Out walls

Hey guys. Ok so for the In/Out walls I was trying to keep within the themes we talked about (metropolis/1984/factory etc) I quite like this image:

I really like the grids and the industrial look of this, I though a shelving system that looked a bit likea big grid system for both the 'In' and 'Out' would look pretty cool, but it would be pretty hard to put up, and the work would be a bit shut off. I'm guessing everyone wants both the 'In' and 'Out' work to be on show as much as possible. I think Matt's idea of doing the evidence bags containing objects/work would have the same problem.

I did a few sketches, and the thing I thought worked best was if we suggest the sort of industrial grid thing using graphics, like this (the bottom drawing- not the top one):The 'In'and 'Out' walls would both have matching grids, shown with graphics (tape? paint? - I don't know) I like the idea that at the start of the exhibition each person's Out 'box' would only have their project description, and a few photos of final pieces etc. and by the end it will hopefully be spilling out and they will all mix together. I much prefer the way it looks without shelves, but I think that because there are going to be 3d objects on show we really need them. The other option is to not have shelves and photograph+print out all 3d things we produce during the time there. What does everyone else think?

Oh yea, and I worked out that everyone gets roughly half a metre squared on both the in and out walls - however this is based on the idea that we won't use the bottom bits of both walls - because if the table is there and people are sat around it and there is work on the bottom row I guess people wont see it.

Switchboard brief

Switch board.

We need everyone to have a think of some ideas to put in the switch board, the more we have the more interesting I think it will be...

These are the ones I have so far (just as example)

  • Pitch
  • Swap
  • Make it move
  • Put in future
  • Draw
  • Turn inside out
  • Sell
  • Photoshop
  • Recontextualise
  • Film
  • Merge
  • Curate
  • Google
  • Wikipedia

That is all, if everyone thinks of a few (4?) for tomorrow we'll be laughing...

Input/Outputs Brief

Based upon this brief that we have for ourselves we need to 'design' our inputs, and present our outputs. The idea is to bring our work into new designers in a way that allows us to discuss it and talk about it with people that might be interested, and then to send it through a new 'process' so that we might arrive at more ideas or thoughts about the work that are documentable and able to be taken forward into new paths of research, and potentially, new outcomes.

THE BRIEF

INPUTS

To collect items of research (already within your work) that you feel might be interesting, whether they went on to be useful or if they still just sit in a sketch book or post-it somewhere. Some examples of these might be

  • Quote
  • Word
  • Photograph
  • Drawing
  • Interview
  • Essay
  • Model
  • Prototype
  • Scrawl on a napkin
  • Short piece of film
  • Post-it note
  • Small objects
  • Recorded conversation
  • Piece of clothing
  • Performance (documentable/performable somehow)

There is no limit 'conceptually', just bear in mind that we have limited space, so think carefully how these can be presented (no benches! but a photograph of a bench or a video on an ipod about it is fine). Each person should have at least 6 inputs, and I think the more the better.

OUTPUTS

We have already reached a series of outputs, i.e. the work that we exhibited on brick lane, so it doesn't make sense to have these as inputs to a new process. Instead these can be presented in the 'outputs' section of the exhibition as a piece that has come to realisation based upon our research. Then, if we feel the need to, they can be taken as inputs and taken through another process.

We need to collect these outputs too, again it's about size, I would say a maximum of two 'outputs' and these need to be smaller than 30cm cube.

SUMMARY

To summarise, the brief is to arrive at at least 5 'inputs' that can be used to inform a process in the new designers space, and to design a way to show 2 outputs.

DEADLINE

Thurday 19th, this gives us a week before new designers to see if we can get everything in the space.
